This course discusses the growth and development of the Church during the incipient years of persecution and prosperity. It will also address the emergence in the Church of the canon of scripture, doctrine, and pastoral practices. Students will be introduced to the Eastern and Western traditions of Christianity and how they grew apart. Other topics discussed include: The Jewish Question; the writings of the post-apostolic age; Gnosticism; the persecutions; the theological schools in Alexandria and Antioch; the Constantinian turning point; theological controversies of the 4th and 5th centuries; monasticism; Celtic and Anglo-Saxon evangelisation; Charlemagne’s Church; monastic and papal reforms.
