Message from our Rector

Greetings to the faculty, staff and students of the CTIS.

In 2020, we had a unique and unexpected situation brought upon us by the Covid pandemic. Physical lectures had to be cancelled and all lectures were instead conducted via Zoom. As many people have said before, every crisis is also an opportunity. But as people of faith, we can mirror that by saying that in every crisis, God is still there to guide us and show us the way to move forward. Despite the pandemic, the success and good feedbacks of the lectures on Zoom have shown us that a crisis can open our eyes to see and do things differently without compromising contents and quality of lectures.

I am heartened that our laity are still enrolling for the various formation sessions. In fact, this should be the best time for those who wish to attend faith formation sessions from the comforts of their own home. Zoom lectures have enabled students to attend classes from their homes and thus save a lot of precious time taken up for travelling. This is both an opportunity and a blessing. I encourage our laity to take this opportunity to avail themselves of this blessing to deepen the knowledge of their faith by simply enrolling for these Zoom formation sessions.

As for now with all the safety measures in place, I suppose lectures on Zoom will still be the way even as we hope that at some point of the year, students can return to physical classes. Although Zoom lectures have proven their usefulness, nothing can replace the experience of physical lectures where human interactions can take place, bonds can be forged and communities of people built. Perhaps, moving ahead a kind of hybrid lectures can be implemented. Similarly, in 2021, CTIS has to regretfully cancel our Inauguration Mass for the Academic Year in January as well as the Graduation Ceremony, customarily held in March. Let us pray for God’s guidance and blessings as we start a new academic year.

God bless you and keep you safe.

Rev. Fr. James Yeo,
Rector – CTIS

Easter Message

Dear CTIS Community,

The Church basks in the light of her Risen Lord! Even amid the COVID-19 outbreak, with disruptions to daily life, work, and public worship, Christians still draw courage and hope from faith in the Resurrection of our Lord. We believe that Christ has conquered death itself, and is present with us in the Holy Spirit. This knowledge is the basis for Christian bravery in the face of earthly danger. But it does not result in reckless bravado, because it is founded on charity. While the faithful do not fear the virus, we are called to be prudent and to respect others who do –  St. Paul taught us the valuable lesson that only knowledge grounded on love leads us to true freedom. (1 Cor. 8) So let us abide by the civil regulations of social distancing out of observing the Lord’s command to love our neighbour.

With the threat of increasing cases and a prolonged shut-in, our neighbours may be finding little cause to be hopeful. Here is where Easter hope is needed! As we rely on technology for our learning, so too we utilise the internet to maintain our social bonds. Participate in socially creative ways to help those who are burdened during this time. Christians can also be conduits of hope by being selective in their social media messaging. Instead of forwarding messages of dread reinforcing this fearful climate of mutual suspicion, choose to circulate inspirational and hopeful things. Through our prayer and communications, we reflect the joy and hope of looking forward to the time when we can restore, rebuild, and grow together again.

And please keep attending your online classes! Pray for us as we anticipate returning to our regular operations when the time comes. On behalf of the Staff and Boards of CTIS, I wish you all a Blessed Eastertide.

Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia!

Arthur Goh
Academic Director
